The 2026 edition of the EMTA Barometer is now released, offering a fresh perspective on the data shaping public transport across Europe. The barometer examines public transport performance in European metropolitan areas in 2025.
Last year, operating costs continued their ascent, compounded by uncertainty over the continent’s security and economic outlook. Ticket revenues and ridership, however, are also increasing, pointing to a more sustainable and resilient future for European mobility.
The electrification of European bus fleets also continued apace in 2025. Electric buses now account for more than one-third of the fleets in Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo and Rotterdam/The Hague. Their share of bus passenger-kilometres is higher still.
Since its launch in 2002, the Barometer has provided a comprehensive and comparable dataset for the continent’s largest metropolitan areas. EMTA’s 35 members organise daily mobility for more than 100 million residents across 21 countries.
Alongside the barometer report, we have also updated the EMTA Barometer Dashboard which provides up-to-date data online.
