Description of metropolitan area
Brussels Capital Region is one of the three Belgian Regions. It is at the same time one of the European official capital, capital of the Flemish speaking community and of the (Belgian) French speaking community.
The territory is divided into 19 communes.
A local Parliament, with 89 members elected each 5 years, is empowered for:
land use planning;
transport (local public transport and water related transport);
public works;
environment;
housing;
bhealth;
garbage collection;
fire brigades and fire protection;
local finances;
agriculture (there is very few agricultural land);
administrative supervision of the communes.
The executive level is assumed by 5 ministers and 3 state secretaries.
The Metropolitan Region includes the Brussels Capital Region and parts of Walloon Region and Flemish Region, in total 135 communes.
