Since August 2025, there has been a fundamental change in boarding on suburban bus lines within the Prague Integrated Transport (PID) system. Boarding through all doors has now been enabled on almost a hundred daytime and ten night time bus lines, instead of the previous boarding only through the front door.
The introduction of the change was preceded by a pilot project that tested the functionality and benefits of the system on nine selected regional lines. The expansion of the regime to more than a hundred bus lines, especially in the most densely populated agglomeration around Prague, is unique in its scope not only within the transport systems in the Czech Republic, but also in the whole of Central Europe.
The all-door boarding regime in regional bus transport is intended to speed up busy connections with frequent stops and high passenger turnover and to shorten delays caused by long check-in times for boarding passengers. The change mainly concerns bus lines from Prague to surrounding municipalities. On these lines, the driver no longer checks the fare. However, the number of ticket inspectors has been significantly increased as a consequence. More frequent checks of travel documents are intended to ensure that passengers do not abuse the system. The change also includes an increase in the surcharge for traveling without a valid ticket.
Even after boarding through all doors is enabled, the possibility of selling tickets from the driver is maintained. The project will be evaluated subsequently. Its termination or, conversely, expansion will depend on whether passengers comply with tariff discipline and how fare revenues develop. This system of boarding through all doors has been used as standard on city bus lines in Prague for many years.
