Description of the transport demand :

In the Budapest region there are 4,9 million trips. The modal split is 61% public transport and 39% private car in Budapest and 36% public transport and 64% private car between Budapest and the suburbs.

Presentation of operating companies :

Most of the local transport, including tram, metro and urban bus services, as well as some suburban rail (HÉV) services are provided by Budapest Transport Company (BKV), a municipality owned corporation.

Other suburban and heavy rail services run under State Railways. Hungarian State Railways Company (MÁV) [since 1.7.2007. his 100% subsidiary company : MÁV-START] with 11 suburban railway lines (these are all of the lines coming to Budapest).

VOLÁNBUSZ Transporting Company (VOLÁNBUSZ) is the largest national state owned regional bus transport company operating suburban lines in Pest County.

Additional smaller state owned regional bus transport companies (Hatvani, Kunság, Nógrád, Vértes Transporting Companies) operate some suburban lines to Budapest. These companies mainly operate in neighboring Counties.

  • Some infrastructure developments (mainly P+R facilities, intermodal interchanges).
  • Timetable harmonization between service providers
  • The extension of the validity of all local monthly passes to every public transport service within Budapest (including rail and regional bus services)
  • Elaboration of a zone-tariff system in the whole area of BKSZ
  • Unified line numbering system for all regional and local services
  • Development of a new online travel planner system
  • Participation in the Budapest Suburban Rail Development Project founded by the Cohesion found
