Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive

Greater Manchester Passenger TransportAuthority (GMPTA) is a body made up of 33councillors from the ten districts of GreaterManchester. GMPTA is responsible for formula-ting transport policy for the county, includingbuilding and extending the transport network.
Greater Manchester Passenger TransportExecutive (GMPTE) is the statutory bodyresponsible for implementing GMPTA’s policies.GMPTE is the promoter of the different systemsand is responsible for planning future enlarge-ments.
Missions
Passenger Transport Authorities are responsible for providing the services and facilities which the market does not provide in large conurbations. Elsewhere this responsability is undertaken by local County Councils.
The District Council in each of these areas contributes finance from local taxes and appoints local councillors to the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority to represent their district. The Authority decides on public transport policy for the county and provides the funds for GMPTE to carry out these policies. The Authority and GMPTE are responsible for: public transport more affordable for people over retirement age, children and disabled people.
- planning and investing in the bus, train andMetrolink networks for the future ;
- providing information about public transportthrough telephone information lines, timeta-bles, general publicity and Travelshops ;
- maintaining a network of subsidised bus servceson routes not commercially viable and securingschools service contracts ;
- ensuring efficiencyand value for money on these services; working alongside train and Metrolink opertors to improve service levels and to monitorquality ;
- supporting the fully accessible Ring and Rideservice, setting high standards of physical acces-sibility to other vehicles, stations and facilities ;
- and providing a travel voucher scheme as analternative to passes for disabled people ;
- funding the non-statutory parts of concessio-nary fares schemes to make public transportmore affordable for people over retirementage, children and disabled people ;
- building and maintaining local bus stations,shelters and stops.
GMPTE’s Budget
GMPTE’s budget for 2006 is 262,86 M¤.
