Funding of public transport (2006)


The operating costs in 2003 amount to 43,7 M ¤, shared as follows :

  • 54,7 % due to bus operating costs (23,9 M ¤)
  • 45,3 % from trolley operation (19,8 M ¤)

The operating revenues come mainly from :

  • tickets sales : bus (10,4 M ¤) - Trolleys (9,3 M ¤)
  • subsidies from national government :
  • bus (13 M ¤)
  • Trolleys (10,3 M ¤)

Investments on public transport (for last 4 years):

  • rolling stock : bus (25 M ¤) / Trolleybus (21,7 M ¤)
  • maintenance & replacement : bus (1,4 M ¤) / Trolley (1,2 M ¤)



Fares (2003)


Most common travel tickets used in Vilnius are single trip ticket and nominal monthly cards. One, three or ten days tickets are also available, but they have a very low rate of use. Standard price for single ticket for bus or trolley is 0,32 ¤, if you get it on board the vehicle it costs 0.41 ¤.

Vilnius still has flat rate paper tickets. There are 20 types of tickets which are divided into main 3 groups: single ticket, monthly ticket and fixed term tickets. There are also several groups of passengers which are subsidized, mostly pupils, students and elder people.



Current developpements and projects


In 2006 contract for Centralized traffic management system implementation in Vilnius was signed. Main objectives of this project is to implement 6 corridors of „green wave“. 13 information real time devices will be established in the city giving for drivers different kind of information about traffic, road conditions, road repairing works, parking possibilities and etc.
